Kerala Minister's Remarks on Muslim League Spark Backlash
A minister in Kerala, Saji Cherian from the CPI(M) party, made some comments that have upset other political leaders.
He talked about how certain parties win in areas where their community is in the majority, like the Muslim League winning in Muslim areas and the BJP in Hindu areas.
He said his party, which supports secularism, is losing because of this.
Other leaders, like those from the Congress party and the Muslim League, said his comments were trying to divide people along religious lines.
They accused the CPI(M) of trying to make political gains by playing on people's religious feelings.
The minister said he was just pointing out the situation and that his party needs to get stronger to fight against communalism.
Kerala Minister Saji Cherian (CPI(M)) criticized the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) for winning in Muslim-majority areas.
Cherian's remarks were seen as an attempt at communal polarisation ahead of the Assembly elections.
Opposition leaders, including Congress's V D Satheesan and IUML's Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal, accused the CPI(M) of trying to divide people along religious lines.
Cherian defended his comments, stating that the Left needs to strengthen to fight the RSS.
The controversy comes amid allegations of communal remarks by other CPI(M)-aligned leaders, including SNDP leader Vellappally Natesan.
