Putin-Linked Businessman Funded Trump Jr. Bahamas Celebrations
Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson had a private wedding ceremony in Florida.
They later held a large celebration in the Bahamas with friends and family.
Russian businessman Umar Kremlev reportedly paid for some of the expensive events.
These included a private island, food, transportation and a fireworks show.
The couple said Kremlev was their friend and gave them the celebration as a generous gift.
They said he did not pay for the wedding ceremony itself.
Kremlev leads an international boxing organization and has ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Some experts worry that a valuable gift from someone close to a foreign government could create influence concerns.
However, the reports did not prove that Kremlev traded the gift for political help.
Umar Kremlev reportedly paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for two nights of celebrations after Donald Trump Jr. married Bettina Anderson.
The Bahamas events included a private-island rental, catering, logistics and a fireworks display reportedly costing at least $70,000.
Payments reportedly passed through a Dubai-based entity affiliated with the International Boxing Association, which Kremlev leads.
Trump Jr. and Bettina described Kremlev’s contribution as an unconditional gift from a friend and denied any political or commercial arrangement.
Experts and Democratic lawmakers raised foreign-influence concerns, although reports found no evidence that Kremlev received a political favor in return.
