Government Clarifies Voluntary Retirement Rules Under Unified Pension Scheme
The government has clarified rules for central government employees who want to retire early under a new pension plan called the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS).
To retire early, you must have worked for at least 20 years and give your boss at least a 3-month notice.
Your boss needs to accept your retirement.
You can ask to shorten the notice period if you have a good reason and it doesn't cause problems for the office.
You can't easily take back your retirement notice; you need special permission from your boss, and you must ask at least 15 days before you planned to retire.
If you retire before working 25 years, you get a partial early retirement payment.
If you work 25 years or more, you get the full early retirement payment.
These rules apply to government workers who were in the National Pension System and decide to join the UPS by November 30, 2025.
Voluntary retirement under the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) requires a minimum of 20 years of regular service.
A minimum written notice period of three months is mandatory for voluntary retirement under UPS.
Employees can request to shorten the notice period if it doesn't cause administrative inconvenience and is approved by the appointing authority.
Withdrawal of a voluntary retirement notice requires specific approval from the appointing authority and must be requested at least 15 days before the intended retirement date.
Retirees are entitled to pro-rata or full assured payouts based on whether they have completed 25 years of qualifying service.
