Hatti Village Becomes Liquor-Free Through Collective Community Action

Hatti Village Becomes Liquor-Free Through Collective Community Action

Hatti is a village in Karnataka where people worked together to stop illegal liquor sales.

Liquor had been sold in several places in and around the village.

Residents said drinking caused family fights, money problems and other difficulties.

The reported death of a 16-year-old boy deeply upset the community.

Women and elders then called for a complete ban on liquor sales.

Villagers agreed to the ban at a meeting held at a temple.

The village received an award and Rs 1 lakh for its efforts.

It plans to use the prize money’s interest to encourage students who do well in school exams.
