Meta’s US Settlement Shifts Accountability for Children’s Online Safety

Meta’s US Settlement Shifts Accountability for Children’s Online Safety

Meta runs Facebook and Instagram, which many children use.

The company reached a settlement with 29 US states about how its platforms can affect children.

Meta may pay up to $18 billion over ten years.

It will add time limits and a nighttime curfew for users under 18.

It will also use stronger age checks and safer default settings.

Notifications may be reduced during school hours.

Meta says it did not do anything wrong.

The agreement does not change some major features, such as personalised recommendations and the advertising-based business model.
