Jio Urges TRAI to Include L and S Bands for Satellite D2D Services in Spectrum Auction
Jio, a big phone company, wants the government to let them buy special airwaves, called spectrum, that can be used for talking to phones directly from satellites.
They say these airwaves, in the L and S bands, are important for the future of phone internet and connecting even in places far away from normal cell towers.
They also say that other big companies around the world are already using these kinds of airwaves to send signals from space to phones.
Jio believes that if they can get these airwaves through the regular auction, it will help make their phone networks better and ready for new technology called 6G.
Additionally, Jio is asking the government to test how regular phone signals and satellite signals can work together safely in the 6 GHz airwave band before they sell it off, so they don't cause problems for each other.
Reliance Jio has urged TRAI to include L and S spectrum bands in telecom auctions for direct-to-device (D2D) satellite services.
Jio argues these bands are crucial for enabling satellite-to-phone connectivity and future 6G innovations.
The company cited global examples like Starlink and Apple/Globalstar using similar frequencies for D2D services.
Jio also requested technical coexistence trials for the upper 6 GHz band to ensure seamless integration of IMT and satellite uplink services.
These proposals align with Jio's vision of integrating non-terrestrial networks into India's connectivity ecosystem.
- Who
- Reliance Jio and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI)
- What
- Jio has asked TRAI to include L and S spectrum bands in upcoming auctions for direct-to-device satellite services and to conduct coexistence trials for the 6 GHz band.
- When
- In a submission to TRAI's consultation paper on spectrum auctions.
- Where
- India
- Why
- To enable satellite-based direct-to-device communication, drive 6G innovations, expand network coverage, and ensure the integrity of both IMT and satellite services.
- Bands Requested
- L band (1-2 GHz) and S band (2-4 GHz)
- Purpose
- Satellite-based direct-to-device (D2D) communication and 6G innovations
- Jio's Argument
- These bands should be treated as IMT spectrum and auctioned to enable unified networks and expand coverage.
- Global Precedent
- Global players like Starlink (1600-2600 MHz) and Apple/Globalstar (S-band) use similar frequencies for D2D services.
- 6 GHz Band Proposal
- Conduct technical coexistence trials for IMT and satellite uplink services before auction.
- Coexistence Study Model
- Follow global practices from CEPT, FCC, and ACMA.
