UN Approves Palestine Partition in 1947
On November 29, 1947, the United Nations decided to split the land of Palestine into two parts: one for Jewish people and one for Arab people.
This was called the partition plan.
The UN thought this was the best way to stop the fighting between the two groups.
The Jewish part was given more land, even though there were fewer Jewish people living there.
The Arab part was given less land.
The city of Jerusalem, which is important to many religions, was to be controlled by the UN.
The Jewish people were happy with this plan, but the Arab people were not.
They thought it was unfair.
After the vote, there was a lot of fighting, and eventually, the Jewish state became Israel.
This decision is still very important today because the fighting between Israel and Palestine continues.
The UN General Assembly voted to partition Palestine into Jewish and Arab states on November 29, 1947.
The plan allocated 55% of the land to the Jewish state and 45% to the Arab state.
Jerusalem was to be under international administration to avoid sectarian conflict.
The vote resulted in 33 in favor, 13 against, and 10 abstentions.
The decision led to immediate violence and eventually the creation of the State of Israel.
