Shipping Companies Plan Suez Canal Return
Big shipping companies are making plans to go back to using the Suez Canal.
They stopped using it for a while because there were attacks on ships by a group called the Houthis.
Now, they are slowly starting to use it again.
Maersk, a Danish company, will start using it again on January 26, 2025.
CMA CGM, another big company, will also use it for some of its trips.
Hapag-Lloyd, a German company, is waiting a bit longer to make sure it's safe.
Wallenius Wilhelmsen, a Norwegian company, is still checking things out before they decide to go back.
They all want to make sure it's safe before they start using the canal again.
Maersk to resume Suez Canal sailings on January 26, 2025, for its Middle East-India to U.S. East Coast service.
CMA CGM to use the Suez Canal for its India-U.S. INDAMEX service starting in January 2025.
Hapag-Lloyd will not adjust operations immediately and expects a 60-90 day transition period.
Wallenius Wilhelmsen is still assessing the situation and has not set a return date.
Shipping companies have been rerouting vessels around Africa since November 2023 due to security risks.
