Indonesia-China Naval Drill Tests Jakarta’s Neutrality Near Taiwan

An Indonesian navy ship briefly sailed with a Chinese navy ship near Taiwan.

Indonesia said this was only a routine passing exercise while its ship was traveling home.

It said the activity was not combat training or preparation for war.

The maneuver happened while Taiwan was holding its own yearly military exercise.

Taiwan worried because China claims Taiwan and often conducts military activities nearby.

Taiwan asked Indonesia to explain why its ship joined the exercise.

Experts said the drill itself was not very important militarily.

They also said it showed how difficult it is for Indonesia to remain neutral while China and the United States compete for influence.

Indonesia is unlikely to fight for China in a Taiwan conflict, but it might need to help its citizens in Taiwan leave safely.
