TikTok Finalizes US Sale Deal
TikTok, which is owned by a Chinese company called ByteDance, has agreed to sell its US operations to a group of American investors.
This group includes companies like Oracle, Silver Lake, and a company from Abu Dhabi called MGX.
They will own 50% of the new US TikTok company, while ByteDance will keep a small part.
The deal is expected to be finalized on January 22.
This sale comes after many years of pressure to sell the US part of TikTok because of concerns about national security.
The new company will be run by Americans and will store all US user data in the US.
TikTok will continue to work the same way, and users won't see any changes.
TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, has signed a deal to sell its US unit to a joint venture led by American investors Oracle, Silver Lake, and Abu Dhabi-based MGX.
The new entity, TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC, will be majority-owned by American investors and will take charge of TikTok’s US business on January 22.
ByteDance will retain a 19.9% stake in the new joint venture, with affiliates of existing ByteDance investors holding 30.1%.
Oracle will act as the joint venture’s trusted security partner, auditing and validating compliance with national security terms, and will store all US user data on its domestic servers.
The deal aims to address US national security concerns and fulfills a law mandating the divestiture of TikTok’s US operations or face a ban.
