Supreme Court praises progress on CCTV installation in police stations
The Supreme Court of India is happy with the progress made in installing CCTV cameras in police stations across the country.
These cameras help make things more transparent and prevent human rights abuses.
The court noted that most states are doing well in installing the cameras.
The government provides most of the money for this, with some states contributing a part.
The court also wants to make sure the cameras are well-maintained.
They will talk about this again on August 5.
The Supreme Court expressed satisfaction with the progress in installing CCTVs in police stations nationwide.
The court highlighted the need for extending the funding scheme and ensuring proper maintenance of the CCTVs.
The Centre provides 100% funding for UTs, 90% for hilly states, and 60% for other states, with the remaining 40% borne by the respective state.
The apex court had initially ordered CCTV installation in police stations in 2018 and later extended it to central investigating agencies in 2020.
The CCTV systems must include night vision, audio-video footage, and data storage for at least one year.
