KMC to Desilt and Strengthen Century-Old Sewers
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is planning to clean and strengthen old brick sewer lines in parts of the city that often flood during rain.
These sewers were built by the British over a hundred years ago and haven't been properly maintained since then.
The KMC wants to fix 88km of these sewers, with a special focus on areas like Elliot Road and Royd Street.
They will dig small pits to clean the sewers and then install a special lining to make them stronger.
This project is expected to take three years and is funded by the state government.
The goal is to stop waterlogging and make sure sewage can flow freely, especially during heavy rains.
KMC plans to desilt and strengthen 88km of century-old brick sewer lines in Kolkata.
The project focuses on areas prone to waterlogging, including Elliot Road and Royd Street.
30km of these sewers were desilted under the JNNURM, and 9km are currently being desilted.
The KMC aims to complete the project within a three-year deadline.
After desilting, GRP liners will be installed to reinforce the sewers and prevent future waterlogging.
