India to revive BoT model for highways
The Indian government plans to build 5,000 km of highways in the next fiscal year using a special model called BoT, where private companies build and operate the roads for a while before giving them back to the government.
This model is making a comeback after a long break because it's expected to bring in more private investment and make toll collection easier with things like FASTag.
The government hopes this will help them save money for other important projects, like job guarantees and subsidies.
Private companies are happy about this plan because it's easier to make money from tolls now, and they can sell the projects back to the government if needed.
The government is also making new rules to make this model more attractive to investors.
Additionally, India's toll collections are expected to reach a record high of ₹1 trillion by FY27, driven by increased traffic and new technologies like FASTag and satellite-based toll systems.
The Indian government plans to bid out 5,000 km of national highways under the BoT model in fiscal 2027, involving private road developers.
The BoT model is expected to attract private capital due to better revenue visibility from FASTag and traffic predictability.
The move could free up government funding for other schemes, such as the national employment guarantee scheme and urea subsidies.
India's national highway toll collections are projected to reach ₹1 trillion by FY27, driven by increased traffic and new toll technologies.
The government is rolling out a satellite-based Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system nationwide by late 2026 to enhance toll collections.
