Gig Work Pays More, Offers Flexibility, Report Finds
A report studied people who earn money through delivery, driving and home-service platforms in India.
It found that these workers earn about ₹138 per hour on average.
Similar formal and informal jobs pay about ₹54 per hour, according to the report.
More than nine out of ten gig workers work part-time.
This lets them fit earning around school, another job or family responsibilities.
Some workers use gig work as their main income, while others use it to earn extra money or gain experience.
The report says workers can develop skills such as customer service, time management and using digital tools.
It also says gig work could help fill many of India’s future non-farm jobs.
Gig workers in delivery, ride-hailing and home services earn average net earnings of about ₹138 per hour, compared with ₹54 in similar jobs, according to Redseer.
More than 90% of monthly active gig workers choose part-time participation to fit work around other responsibilities.
The report says gig work could bridge nearly 70% of India’s non-farm employment gap by 2030.
Reported worker protections include accident insurance, health insurance, emergency assistance, maternity support and skill development.
About 70% of surveyed workers said gig work improved their future earning opportunities through skills, work history and professional networks.
