SEBI Orders Primarily Target Unregistered Trading Call Providers, Not Registered Investment Advisers
Imagine a teacher giving out advice on how to do homework.
Most of the time, the teacher is telling off kids who aren't supposed to be giving advice at all, or kids who give quick tips on specific problems, like which math problem to do next.
Only a very few times is the teacher correcting the main, official tutors who give detailed, long-term guidance.
Recently, the rules changed so those quick tip-givers can't become official tutors.
This means the teacher can now focus more on helping the real tutors do their best job for the students.
The goal is to make sure people giving financial advice are doing it in a way that truly helps their clients, not just by giving quick stock tips.
SEBI issued 218 enforcement orders between 2013 and March 2025 concerning investment advisers.
Only 6 of these orders (3%) were against registered investment advisers, involving minor procedural issues.
The vast majority of orders (97%) were directed at unregistered or registered trading call providers.
Unregistered trading call providers received 147 orders (67%), while registered ones received 65 orders (30%).
SEBI amended regulations in December 2024 to prevent trading call providers from registering as investment advisers.
