Slovakia to Block New EU Sanctions on Russia
Imagine the EU wants to punish Russia by making it harder for them to do business.
Slovakia's leader, Robert Fico, says his country won't agree to these punishments if they hurt Slovakia.
He believes some of the punishments could be bad for Slovakia.
His country also stopped sending weapons to Ukraine.
Slovakia gets energy from Russia, and Fico doesn't want anything to disrupt that supply.
Basically, Slovakia wants to be friendly with the EU but not if it causes problems for Slovakia.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated Slovakia will block EU sanctions against Russia if they harm national interests.
Parliament approved a resolution urging the government not to support new measures against Russia.
Fico has been an opponent of sanctioning Russia, citing damage to Slovakia and the EU.
Slovakia stopped official state military aid to Ukraine after Fico's government took power.
Fico indicated he would not support measures stopping the import of Russian fuel for Slovakia’s nuclear power plants.
