Amazon Resets God of War Series After Kratos Recast
Amazon is making a television show based on the God of War games.
Ryan Hurst was first chosen to play Kratos, but he injured his arm while filming.
Dave Bautista will now play Kratos instead.
Because the main actor changed, the production will start over.
None of the earlier filmed scenes will be used.
The story follows Kratos as he travels with his son, Atreus.
Their relationship is an important part of the show.
Amazon must now show that Bautista can portray both Kratos's strength and his emotions.
The reset comes while audiences have high expectations for video-game shows such as The Last of Us and Fallout.
Dave Bautista will replace Ryan Hurst as Kratos after Hurst suffered a torn bicep during filming.
Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television will discard all footage filmed with Hurst.
Filming with Bautista is expected to restart in Vancouver in mid-October.
The series centers on Kratos and his 10-year-old son, Atreus, and remains planned for two back-to-back seasons.
The reset increases pressure on Amazon to successfully adapt the major God of War video-game franchise.

Reasons for optimism
Reasons for concern
Bautista’s suitability for Kratos
Reasons for optimism
Bautista has a professional wrestling background and has prepared physically for another major action role, which could support a physically demanding portrayal.
Reasons for concern
Kratos requires more than physical strength; the series must also capture his restraint, brutality, tragic history, and emotional complexity.
Story foundation
Reasons for optimism
The mythology, established characters, and father-son relationship give the series strong material for a television drama.
Reasons for concern
The production must rebuild around a new lead after months of filming, creating substantial logistical and creative pressure.
