World Diabetes Day: Mumbai Survey Shows Low Awareness of Sugar Risks
On World Diabetes Day, a survey in Mumbai showed that many people don't know how dangerous eating too much sugar can be.
Only about a quarter of the people asked knew about the risks.
This is important because many people have high blood sugar or diabetes and don't even know it until they get very sick.
To help, the city is checking people for diabetes and high blood pressure, especially those over 30.
They are also giving advice to patients on what to eat to prevent diabetes.
A special program is teaching young people in colleges about healthy eating.
The city wants everyone to use free check-ups, read food labels, eat less sugar, and exercise more to stay healthy.
A BMC survey revealed only 27% of Mumbai respondents are aware of the risks associated with excessive sugar consumption.
In a separate survey of 5,000 people, 15.6% were found to be pre-diabetic, indicating a significant detection gap.
Over the past three years, BMC health institutions have screened 5,59,751 people for diabetes and hypertension.
BMC is providing dietary counseling and has established Non-Communicable Disease Corners in hospitals for systematic health checks.
The city urges the public to utilize free screening facilities, reduce processed sugar intake, and adopt active lifestyles.
