Tamil Nadu Borrowing Rises as Spending Outpaces Revenue

Tamil Nadu Borrowing Rises as Spending Outpaces Revenue

Tamil Nadu collected less money than it spent during the first four months of the financial year.

From April to July, it received about ₹89,718 crore but spent about ₹1.23 lakh crore.

This created a gap of ₹25,267 crore.

The government borrowed money to help pay for welfare programmes, development projects and other commitments.

It borrowed ₹12,044 crore in July alone.

Interest on earlier loans cost ₹21,176 crore.

Pension payments cost another ₹17,237 crore.

Revenue increased compared with the previous year, but spending and borrowing also rose.

The figures may lead to closer examination of the government’s plans for managing debt and funding promised schemes.
