Section 301 Uncertainty Complicates Nearly Completed India-US Trade Deal
India and the United States are close to finishing a trade agreement.
The agreement would set rules for buying and selling goods between the two countries.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said the talks have reached a broad understanding.
However, the United States is still examining some Indian trade practices under a law called Section 301.
This law can lead to extra tariffs or other trade restrictions.
The United States first proposed an extra 12.5% tariff for India but later reduced it to 10%.
India and the United States must decide when to finish the agreement while this investigation continues.
The talks have taken time because the two countries have very different economies and types of producers.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said India-US trade negotiations are very, very far advanced.
Jaishankar said the ongoing US Section 301 process could affect when the agreement is formally concluded.
Section 301 allows the United States to investigate foreign trade practices it considers unfair or burdensome.
The United States reduced a proposed additional tariff on India from 12.5% to 10% after bilateral engagement.
India wants tariff conditions that help its exporters compete with suppliers from ASEAN, China and Bangladesh.
