Latin America Set to Launch Region's First AI Model
Imagine a new type of computer brain, called Latam-GPT, that is being made by lots of countries in Latin America.
This computer brain will be able to understand the different languages and cultures of the region, unlike other computer brains that mostly understand English.
It will be used in places like schools and hospitals to help people.
The project began in January 2023, and it will be finished in September.
One of the goals is to help preserve Indigenous languages by creating translators, like one for the Rapa Nui language.
This project uses existing technology and will use computers from the region.
A dozen Latin American countries are collaborating on Latam-GPT, an AI model.
Latam-GPT aims to understand the region's diverse cultures and languages.
The project is led by Chile's National Center for AI and over 30 regional institutions.
It seeks to improve AI accessibility in schools, hospitals and for Indigenous languages.
Latam-GPT is based on Llama 3 technology and will be launched in September.
