States Oppose MGNREGA Rechristening and Funding Changes
Rahul Gandhi and the Tamil Nadu government are upset about changes to a program called MGNREGA, which gives people in rural areas work for 100 days.
The government wants to rename it and make states pay more money for it.
They think this will hurt the people who rely on this program, especially women, people with disabilities, and those from marginalized communities.
They want the program to stay the same and keep the name of Mahatma Gandhi.
Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a resolution opposing the rechristening of MGNREGA to VB-G RAM G.
States like Punjab, Telangana, and Karnataka have also opposed the changes, alleging it will harm the program.
Chief Minister MK Stalin criticized the new Act, stating it burdens states with 40% of the financial component.
The resolution demands the retention of the name Mahatma Gandhi and the old system of fund allocation based on employment demand.
Rahul Gandhi accused the government of trying to dismantle MGNREGA, comparing it to the controversial farm laws.
