Delhi court convicts man after linking dowry demands to death
A Delhi court found Surender Yadav guilty after his wife Pooja died in 2021.
The court said Pooja had been treated cruelly because of demands for money or dowry.
Pooja had called her father two days before her death.
She reportedly told him that she had been beaten for three days.
The court said this conversation connected the money demands to her death.
Yadav was also accused of gambling, drinking and assaulting her.
His lawyers argued that depression and financial problems during the Covid pandemic caused her suicide.
The judge did not accept that explanation.
The court said the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
A Delhi court convicted Surender Yadav in his wife Pooja’s 2021 dowry death case.
Yadav was convicted under IPC Sections 304B for dowry death and 498A for cruelty.
The prosecution said Yadav demanded money, gambled, drank and frequently assaulted Pooja.
Pooja told her father by telephone that she had been beaten for three days over money demands.
The court rejected the defense claim that depression and pandemic-era financial hardship caused her suicide.

Defense position
The defense argued that Pooja ended her life because of depression caused by financial hardships during the Covid pandemic.
Evidence of harassment
Prosecution and court’s view
The court relied on witness testimony and Pooja’s telephone account to her father, and said the lack of independent neighbors as witnesses was not fatal because such abuse often occurs inside the matrimonial home.
