CAT Stays Government Inquiry in 2019 Phone Tapping Case
Imagine a high-ranking police officer, Mr. Kumar, who is accused of listening in on people's phone calls without permission back in 2019.
The government started investigating him, but then the investigation was dropped.
Suddenly, the government decided to start the investigation again, just as Mr. Kumar was about to be promoted.
Mr. Kumar says the government is being unfair because they are bringing back an old case after a long time and just before his promotion.
A court has temporarily stopped this new investigation while they decide whether it's fair to start it again.
The officer argues the new investigation is designed to prevent his promotion, and the court is reviewing the legality of the new probe.
The CAT has stayed the government's fresh disciplinary inquiry against IPS officer Alok Kumar.
The inquiry relates to the alleged phone tapping and leak of audio from 2019.
The government had previously dropped the inquiry in 2023.
Kumar claims the fresh inquiry is aimed at derailing his promotion.
The court has paused the inquiry until June 10.
