BJP Leader Arrested for Rape in Cooch Behar
A man named Jayanta Banik, who is a leader in the BJP party, was arrested on Saturday night.
The police took him away from his house in Cooch Behar town.
He is accused of doing something very bad to a woman who worked in his house as a helper.
The woman said that for a long time, he forced her to do things she didn't want to.
She was scared to say anything before, but finally told the police on Saturday.
The police then arrested him.
On Sunday, he was taken to court and will stay in jail for 14 days.
The BJP party said they will wait to see what really happened before saying more.
Jayanta Banik, a BJP leader in Cooch Behar, was arrested on Saturday night for allegedly raping his domestic help.
The victim, who had worked in Banik’s house for years, filed a complaint alleging repeated sexual assault over one-and-a-half to two years.
Banik was produced in court on Sunday and remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.
Banik contested the 2022 civic polls as a BJP candidate from ward 20 but narrowly lost.
The BJP district president suggested the case might be politically motivated, stating he would comment after investigating the facts.
