Centre Advances September Payments Ahead of Proposed Bank Strike
Bank unions in India have proposed stopping work for three days at the end of September.
They want banks to operate five days a week and have other demands.
Because the strike may happen, the government plans to pay many central government workers and pensioners early.
The September payment is scheduled for September 25.
This early payment is treated as an advance, not an extra payment.
If the final amount needs to be corrected, the change will be made from the October payment.
Banks will open on Sunday, September 27, before the proposed strike begins.
People are also being asked to use ATMs, UPI and other online banking services and finish important transactions early.
The Finance Ministry advised departments to disburse September 2026 salaries, wages and pensions on September 25.
The United Forum of Bank Unions has proposed a nationwide strike from September 28 to 30, seeking five-day banking among other demands.
The advance-payment measure covers central government employees, industrial workers and pensioners, including personnel in Defence, Posts and Telecommunications.
Any necessary adjustment to the advance will be made from October 2026 salary, wages or pension payments.
Banks, including Regional Rural Banks, were directed to open on Sunday, September 27, while customers were urged to use digital services and complete essential transactions early.
