India Proposes HECI to Overhaul Higher Education Regulation
Imagine the government is changing how it watches over colleges and universities.
Right now, different groups like the UGC, AICTE, and NCTE do this.
But, the government wants to create one new group called the HECI.
This new group would be in charge of making sure schools are doing a good job, are fair, and have enough money.
They want this change to make education better, with less red tape, and encourage new ideas, as mentioned in the NEP 2020.
The idea for the HECI isn't new; there was even a draft bill a few years ago.
Now, the government is working on a new bill to make it happen.
The Ministry of Education is drafting a bill to establish the Higher Education Commission of India (HECI).
HECI is proposed as a unified higher education regulatory body.
The HECI aims to replace the UGC, AICTE, and NCTE.
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 envisions a 'light but tight' regulatory framework.
Renewed efforts for HECI began after July 2021 under Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
