New US Student Visa Rule Risks Losing Scientific Edge

New US Student Visa Rule Risks Losing Scientific Edge

The United States may make a new rule about student visas.

A visa is special permission for someone from another country to study in the U.S. The new rule would only allow students to stay for four years.

Most college programs finish in four years, but not all of them do.

Some programs, like training to be a pharmacist, take six or seven years.

A PhD in physics can take five years or more to finish.

If the rule becomes real, these students would have to leave the country and come back.

They could also ask the immigration office for more time.

That could be stressful, because their visa might be denied.

People worry this could make the U.S. lose smart students and its scientific advantage.
