Sensex, Nifty Post Weekly Losses on Crude Surge, Iran Tensions
People buy and sell small pieces of companies called shares, and a stock market is where this happens.
In India, the two most famous stock market groups are the Sensex and the Nifty.
They tell us how the country's biggest companies are doing.
Last week, these markets ended a little lower after two weeks of going up.
Prices came down partly because oil became more expensive, and India needs oil for many things.
There was also worry about problems in the Middle East, especially talk that the United States might stop ships near Iran.
When people are nervous about such things, they sometimes sell their shares, which makes prices fall.
Some good news, like strong company earnings and a steady rupee, helped a bit.
But these gains were not enough, and the week ended with losses.
Investors are now watching oil prices and world news to decide what to do next.
India's benchmarks fell about 0.51% intraday on Friday before recovering, with the Sensex closing at 78,009.25 (down 0.09%) and the Nifty at 24,366 (down 0.12%).
The Sensex and Nifty lost 0.62% and 0.83% for the week, snapping their two-week winning streak.
Sentiment was dampened by crude oil prices hovering near $87 per barrel and the US threat of an indefinite naval blockade of Iran, analysts said.
Consumer durables (+1.30%) and realty (+1.09%) were the only weekly sectoral gainers, while metals, FMCG, autos, healthcare and financial services led losses.
TCS fell 3.86% to be the top Sensex loser, while Titan Company, BEL, Bharti Airtel, Bajaj Finserv and HCL Technologies were the top gainers.
