UN Reports Highest Civilian Deaths in Ukraine Since 2022
The United Nations reported that in 2025, there were more civilian deaths in Ukraine than in any year since 2022.
This is because there was more fighting and Russia used more long-range weapons.
The UN counted 2,514 people killed and 12,142 injured, which is 31% more than in 2024.
The real number of deaths is probably much higher because the UN can't check all the places where fighting happened.
One of these places is Mariupol, where thousands of people are believed to have died during a long battle at the start of the war.
Russia also made more progress on the battlefield in 2025 than in any other year except 2022.
The UN reported 2,514 civilian deaths and 12,142 injuries in Ukraine in 2025, a 31% increase from 2024.
The rise in casualties was driven by intensified hostilities and the expanded use of long-range weapons by Russia.
The UN has verified almost 15,000 civilian deaths since Russia invaded in 2022, but the actual number is likely higher.
Russia's battlefield gains in Ukraine in 2025 were the highest since 2022, according to an AFP analysis.
The UN cannot verify many cases due to lack of access to areas under Russian occupation, such as Mariupol.
