Bengaluru Begins Vacant Plot Cleanup as Owners Bear Costs

Bengaluru Begins Vacant Plot Cleanup as Owners Bear Costs

Bengaluru is cleaning private empty plots that have weeds, bushes and construction waste.

The city gave owners time to clean their plots themselves.

The first deadline was August 15, and it was extended to August 22.

About 30% of owners cleaned their plots, but about 70% did not.

The Greater Bengaluru Authority has started cleaning the remaining plots.

Owners will have to pay the cleaning cost through their property tax.

The cost depends on the size of the plot and official rates.

There is no penalty for the first cleanup, but repeat neglect can bring a penalty.

Officials say clean plots can help prevent problems involving mosquitoes, flies, snakes and rats.
