Russia Charges Telegram Founder with Terrorism
Russia’s main security agency, the FSB, says that Pavel Durov, the man who created the popular messaging app Telegram, helped terrorists.
They claim Telegram didn’t delete channels and bots that Ukrainian spies used to plan attacks in Russia.
The FSB also says a dating chatbot on Telegram was used to recruit 46 young Russians for sabotage.
Durov, who lives in Dubai and has French and UAE passports, says the charges are a pretext to stop people from using Telegram.
If he is found guilty, he could face life in prison.
This is part of Russia’s effort to control the internet and limit foreign apps.
Telegram is still widely used, but Russia has blocked or slowed it.
The case shows a clash between a tech founder and the Kremlin over privacy and security.
The outcome will affect how free people can communicate online.
Russia’s FSB charged Telegram founder Pavel Durov with aiding terrorism and placed him on an international wanted list.
The FSB alleges Telegram failed to remove channels, chats, and bots used by Ukrainian intelligence, terrorist and extremist groups to coordinate sabotage, terrorism, mass murder, and cyberfraud in Russia.
The agency claims a Telegram dating chatbot was used to recruit 46 young Russians (ages 12‑22) for sabotage and terrorist activities, with those users detained since July 2025.
Durov, a 41‑year‑old Russian‑born entrepreneur with French and UAE citizenship, has long clashed with Moscow over Telegram’s privacy and has faced legal scrutiny in France.
If convicted, Durov could face life imprisonment under Russian law, amid a broader Kremlin push to tighten internet control and restrict foreign platforms.
