Toyota and Suzuki Alliance Faces Market Share Decline
Toyota and Maruti Suzuki (a part of Suzuki) teamed up in 2019 to share car models and technology.
They started by selling the same cars with different brand names, like the Toyota Glanza and Suzuki Baleno.
At first, their combined market share in India was high, but over five years, it has decreased from 53% to 48%.
Maruti Suzuki's market share dropped significantly, while Toyota's more than doubled.
This happened because some customers who liked Maruti Suzuki's cars preferred the Toyota brand for its perceived premium quality.
Also, other car companies like Tata Motors and Mahindra launched new, popular SUVs that took away some of Maruti Suzuki and Toyota's customers.
Despite selling more units overall, Maruti Suzuki struggled to keep up with the growing demand for premium SUVs, a segment where their partnership was supposed to give them an advantage.
Toyota and Maruti Suzuki's combined market share in India dropped from 53% in 2020 to 48% in 2025.
Maruti Suzuki's market share decreased from 49.9% in 2020 to 40.2% in 2025, while Toyota's share increased from 3.1% to 7.8%.
The alliance's models, such as the Toyota Glanza (rebadged Suzuki Baleno) and the codeveloped Grand Vitara and Hyryder, have not helped recapture the 2020 peak market share.
Toyota has benefited from the alliance by gaining high-volume cars without significant capital expenditure, increasing its sales fivefold from 2020 to 2025.
Maruti Suzuki has struggled in the premium segment, with its Invicto selling only 3,946 units in 2025 compared to nearly 50,000 units of the rebadged Toyota Innova Hycross.
