Germany Sets Conditions for UniCredit’s Commerzbank Takeover Talks

Germany Sets Conditions for UniCredit’s Commerzbank Takeover Talks

UniCredit, an Italian bank, wants to take control of Commerzbank, a major German bank.

Germany’s government owns about 13% of Commerzbank.

Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil met UniCredit CEO Andrea Orcel to discuss the possible takeover.

Klingbeil said the meeting was constructive but set several conditions.

He wants Commerzbank to stay listed on the stock market and keep its headquarters in Frankfurt.

He also wants it to continue helping small and medium-sized German businesses.

The government is concerned about Commerzbank’s more than 40,000 employees.

UniCredit has nearly half of the shares, but regulatory approvals are still needed before it can take control.
