Mumbai SRA Recovers Crores from Builders for Slum Dwellers
Imagine some builders owe money to people living in slums while they wait for their new homes.
The Mumbai government has been cracking down on these builders.
They've collected a lot of money, over a billion rupees, to pay the slum residents.
Some builders still owe money, but new rules were made to help get the money faster.
These rules allow the government to take the builders' property if they don't pay, and even possibly send them to jail, so the slum residents get the money they deserve to help speed up their redevelopment projects.
SRA in Mumbai collected ₹1,386 crore from developers for unpaid rent to slumdwellers.
₹601 crore was recovered under regular schemes, ₹134 crore under amnesty, and ₹650 crore as advance rent.
₹279 crore in dues remain outstanding under regular schemes; ₹367 crore under the amnesty scheme.
Maharashtra legislature passed an amendment granting SRA greater power to recover pending rents.
The amendment allows for property attachment, sales, and potential imprisonment of defaulters.
