UN Reports Warn Climate Crisis Threatens Humanity’s Future
The Earth is getting hotter because of climate change.
New United Nations reports say the world may soon pass a dangerous warming limit.
Even if countries keep their promises, temperatures could still rise significantly by 2100.
A powerful El Niño may make heat, drought and damage worse until early next year.
Rising seas are also threatening coastal cities such as Mumbai and Calcutta.
Rich countries could lose trillions of dollars in assets, while poorer countries may face large-scale displacement.
The editorial says people should not respond with helplessness.
It calls for protests, public education and careful voting.
Young voters are already asking politicians to take more responsibility for environmental problems.
A United Nations Environment Programme report projects that global warming could breach the Paris Agreement’s 1.5-degree Celsius threshold.
Even if countries meet their climate pledges, temperatures could rise by about 2.6 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels by 2100.
The World Meteorological Organization warns that a prolonged, “supersized” El Niño could intensify heat, drought, trade disruptions and ecological damage.
Global sea levels rose 4.7 millimetres annually from 2014 to 2023, increasing to 5.9 millimetres in 2024.
The editorial urges public protests, awareness campaigns and informed voting to pressure governments into stronger climate action.
- Who
- The United Nations, the United Nations Environment Programme, the World Meteorological Organization, governments and citizens are central to the report and editorial.
- What
- Fresh climate reports warn of rising temperatures, a potentially severe El Niño, higher sea levels and major human and economic damage.
- When
- Sea-level figures cover 2014 to 2024; projected warming extends to 2100, while the El Niño is expected to last until early next year.
- Where
- The risks are global, with Mumbai and Calcutta specifically identified as vulnerable coastal cities.
- Why
- Climate change, insufficient climate action and the failure of countries to meet stronger goals are driving the worsening crisis.
- Warming threshold
- The world is projected to breach the 1.5-degree Celsius limit associated with the 2015 Paris Agreement.
- 2100 projection
- Temperatures could rise by around 2.6 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels even if national climate pledges are fulfilled.
- El Niño
- The World Meteorological Organization warns that a “supersized” El Niño could worsen heat, drought, trade disruption and ecological damage.
- Sea-level rise, 2014–2023
- Average annual sea-level rise was 4.7 millimetres.
- Sea-level rise, 2024
- Annual sea-level rise reached 5.9 millimetres.
- Potential economic losses
- High-income economies could lose assets worth $2 trillion to $3.5 trillion.
- Human displacement
- Poor and middle-income countries could face an unprecedented displacement crisis.
