India Life Insurers Post Q1 Growth Amid GST Impact
In India, four big private life insurance companies sold more policies in the first quarter of the year.
Most of the new sales came from big companies buying group plans, not from regular people.
The government gave a tax break on protection plans, which made more people buy them, but it also made the insurers earn less money on each sale.
The companies made more profit than last year, but they think the tax break will not help as much in the future.
Experts say the growth will slow down a bit, but the companies expect their profits to get better as the tax rules change.
India’s four listed private life insurers saw Q1 new business growth driven mainly by large group policies, not retail demand.
GST exemption on pure protection policies lifted retail sales but cut margins by 60–120 basis points, expected to ease by December.
Standalone profits rose 12–28% YoY, with HDFC Life at ₹611.42 cr, SBI Life ₹725 cr, ICICI Prudential ₹386 cr, Canara HSBC ₹28 cr.
Group business remains the biggest swing factor; insurers warn the June‑quarter spike is unlikely to repeat.
Analysts forecast slower growth ahead, with individual APE expected to grow 14–15% FY27, but margins may improve as the tax impact normalises.
