‘Water Link’ Tunnels Proposed To Divert 249 TMC Of North Konkan Floodwater Eastward · freepressjournal.in

Praful Kadam has suggested building tunnels to move extra floodwater from North Konkan to drier parts of Maharashtra.

Konkan often gets heavy floods in June and July.

At the same time, some eastern areas have too little water.

The proposal says 249.43 TMC of water could be moved through tunnels.

The water would mainly help Western Maharashtra and Marathwada.

Kadam also said it could later benefit Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu.

He believes tunnels would move more water than some proposed canals or diversion structures.

The Maharashtra government has received the proposal, but the article does not say that construction has been approved.

Kisan Army and Water Army leader who submitted the tunnel proposal

“The amount of water that can be transferred through these schemes is extremely low and, considering the requirements of Maharashtra, highly inadequate. Therefore, instead of diverting Konkan water from the upper reaches of the mountains, I have proposed diverting it directly from the Konkan base through tunnels towards the east.”

“Every year, Konkan experiences floods during June-July, while drought-prone regions face water shortages during the same period. If 249.43 TMC of excess floodwater from North Konkan is brought to the drought-prone regions, the problems of both regions can be addressed.”
