India's New Labour Codes Aims to Boost Employment and Ease Business
The Indian government has introduced new labour codes that will make it easier for companies to hire and fire workers, but with more formal employment rules.
The new laws will ensure that more workers get formal jobs with all the benefits.
Inspectors will now help businesses instead of just checking them.
The codes also include special rules for women working night shifts, health check-ups for older workers, and social security for all kinds of workers, including those who work on platforms like gig workers.
All workers will get a minimum wage, and their benefits will be linked to their Aadhaar number so they can use them anywhere in India.
These changes aim to boost employment and make it easier for businesses to operate.
New labour codes formalise employment for up to 300 workers per unit, up from 100.
Inspectors will act as facilitators rather than obstructers for industries.
All workers, including gig and platform workers, will be covered by social security.
Statutory minimum wage payment and timely payment ensured for all workers.
Fixed-term employees will receive equal benefits to permanent workers, including leave and medical benefits.
