Indian Movements That Secured Everyday Rights
A long time ago, many rights that we take for granted today were not always there.
People had to fight for them.
In India, there were many protests and hunger strikes that helped make these rights a reality.
For example, workers wanted to know how government money was being spent, so they started a movement that led to the Right to Information Act.
Another person, Potti Sriramulu, went on a hunger strike for 58 days to demand a separate state for Telugu-speaking people, which eventually led to the creation of Andhra State.
Similarly, forest-dwelling communities fought for their rights to live on the land they had always called home, leading to the Forest Rights Act.
Later, Anna Hazare's hunger strike pushed for a law to fight corruption, resulting in the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act.
All these efforts by ordinary people helped turn their demands into the everyday rights we enjoy today.
The Right to Information (RTI) Act was passed in 2005 after years of protests by the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan (MKSS) demanding transparency in government spending.
Potti Sriramulu's 58-day hunger strike in 1952 led to the creation of Andhra State and the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, which reorganized India's states on linguistic lines.
The Forest Rights Act of 2006 recognized the rights of tribal and forest-dwelling communities over forest land, following sustained protests by various groups.
Anna Hazare's hunger strike in 2011 sparked a nationwide movement for anti-corruption laws, resulting in the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act of 2013.
These movements and protests by ordinary Indians have turned their demands into the everyday rights that are now taken for granted.
