Niti Aayog Praises Telangana's AI Agriculture System as a Model
Imagine a smart computer program that helps farmers grow their crops better.
That's what Telangana has in India with something called 'Saagu Baagu.'
This program uses artificial intelligence, like a super-smart helper, to give farmers advice.
It tells them the best way to plant, how much fertilizer to use, and when to sell their crops.
Because of this smart advice, farmers in Telangana grew more food, got better prices for what they sold, and used less fertilizer.
This made them earn a lot more money!
Niti Aayog, a government think tank, liked this so much that they wrote about it in a report, saying it's a great example for other farmers in India and around the world.
The program is now being made bigger to help even more farmers grow more food and make more money.
Niti Aayog has recognized Telangana's AI-powered agricultural advisory system, Saagu Baagu, as a leading model for technological advancement in farming.
The Saagu Baagu pilot project, initiated in 2021 for chilli cultivation, demonstrated significant improvements including a 21% rise in crop yields and an 11% increase in crop prices.
Farmers utilizing the Saagu Baagu system saw a 9% reduction in input usage and a 5% decrease in fertilizer consumption, leading to income increases of approximately ₹66,000 per acre per crop cycle.
Telangana has expanded the Saagu Baagu program to reach five lakh farmers across ten districts and cover five major crops, reinforcing its status in tech-driven agriculture.
Niti Aayog's report, "Reimagining agriculture," highlights artificial intelligence and other frontier technologies as crucial for addressing challenges faced by India's smallholder farmers, such as climate change and post-harvest losses.
