Tiruppur seeks worker housing in industrial policy
The Tiruppur Exporters Association (TEA) has asked the Tamil Nadu government to include affordable housing and dormitory-style hostels for migrant workers in the new industrial policy.
This is important because the textile industry in Tiruppur needs more workers to grow and compete globally.
The industry wants the government to build worker accommodation parks in four zones, which can house 1 lakh workers in the first phase.
They also want help with technology upgrades and green subsidies.
The industry expects to create 2 to 3 lakh more jobs in the next few years because of India's free trade agreements with other countries.
The Tiruppur Exporters Association (TEA) has urged the Tamil Nadu government to include affordable housing for migrant workers in the proposed Industrial Policy 2026.
TEA proposed worker accommodation parks in four industrial zones, each with a capacity of 25,000 workers, totaling 1 lakh workers in the first phase.
The industry is facing a 20% worker shortage and aims to attract and retain workers through adequate accommodation.
TEA also requested capital subsidies for technology upgrades, a Technical Textiles and Centre of Excellence for Activewear, and green subsidies.
India's Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with 38 countries are expected to boost apparel exports and create 2 to 3 lakh additional jobs in the Tiruppur cluster.
