Tanzania President Vows to Investigate Election Violence and Deaths
Tanzania's president, Samia Suluhu Hassan, has said she will look into the violence that happened during the country's recent elections.
She acknowledged that people died and offered her condolences to their families.
The president plans to create a special group to find out why the violence happened and work towards peace.
This comes after the U.N. and the main opposition party said that many people were killed, though the government has said those numbers are too high.
Some people were charged with serious crimes for protesting, but the president thinks some of them were just following others and might not face charges.
Election observers also said that the voting process itself had problems.
Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan has vowed to investigate election-related violence and acknowledged that lives were lost.
The government will establish an inquiry commission to investigate the root causes of the violence and promote reconciliation.
The U.N. estimates hundreds were killed during protests, while the main opposition claims over 1,000 deaths.
President Hassan called for prosecutors to drop charges against some individuals accused of treason for protesting, suggesting some were merely following the crowd.
African Union observers noted that the election process was marred by ballot box stuffing.
