SAT Allows Rohit Salgaocar to Cross-Examine Ketan Parekh
The Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) has allowed a businessman named Rohit Salgaocar to question another businessman, Ketan Parekh, in a court case.
This case is about something called front-running, which is when someone uses private information about big trades to make money unfairly.
SEBI, which is like a financial watchdog, had earlier said no to this request, but SAT overturned that decision.
Salgaocar says Parekh's statements could wrongly blame him, so he wants to ask Parekh questions to clear his name.
SEBI says Parekh's statements are not the only evidence, but Salgaocar's team argues that their practices are normal in the industry.
The tribunal has now ordered SEBI to set a date for the cross-examination, which will be important for the case.
SAT allowed Rohit Salgaocar to cross-examine Ketan Parekh in a front-running case, overturning SEBI's earlier refusal.
Salgaocar argued that Parekh's statements could implicate him and that he has the right to test their veracity.
SEBI maintained that its case does not rely solely on Parekh's statements and accused Salgaocar of sharing non-public information.
Salgaocar's defense claims that scouting counterparties for large block trades is a common industry practice.
The tribunal ordered SEBI to schedule the cross-examination, which will be a key part of the ongoing proceedings.
