Book 'For a Just Republic' Critiques India's Nation-State Model Amidst Crisis

Imagine India is like a big house with two main parts.

One part is the official 'nation-state' – that's like the government, the police, and the laws, often written in English.

The other part is the 'people-nation' – that's everyone else, their stories, and their languages, existing in their own communities.

This book says that the official part sometimes tries to make everyone the same, ignoring the many different kinds of people and their unique histories.

It looks at events like new citizenship laws, farmer protests, and violence in Manipur to show how this happens.

The author, Partha Chatterjee, suggests that to make India fairer, we need to pay more attention to the 'people-nation' and the different regions, instead of just the central government's rules.

He believes a more just India is possible if people work together and respect all its diverse communities.
