Former German Spy Chief Arrested on Espionage and Treason Suspicion

German authorities arrested August Hanning, who once led Germany’s foreign intelligence agency.

They suspect him of espionage and treason.

Prosecutors say he received secret documents from his former chief of staff, identified as Manfred D. They say Manfred D. passed him about 2,000 documents over the years, many of them classified.

Prosecutors also allege Hanning used secret information to write an analysis for someone from a foreign intelligence service.

They have not said which intelligence services were involved.

Hanning’s arrest is an accusation, not a finding of guilt.

Treason can carry a life sentence in Germany.
