Iran War and El Niño Could Push Fuel Subsidies Past $1 Trillion

Iran War and El Niño Could Push Fuel Subsidies Past $1 Trillion

A United Nations study says governments may spend more than $1 trillion this year helping people cope with fuel costs.

The Iran war has added pressure to energy prices.

Governments are also paying more to borrow money, making it harder to afford support.

A strong El Niño could bring floods or droughts and make food shortages worse.

Many more countries started using price controls, subsidies or tax cuts between April and September.

Without this help, about 130 million more people could have fallen below a poverty measure.

The study says these problems may be strongest in early 2027.

In September, energy prices were linked to protests in at least 10 countries.
