Gujarat Hilsa Enters Bangladesh, But Fails Taste Test

Hilsa is a fish that many people in Bangladesh love to eat.

Recently, fish from Gujarat in India was brought into Bangladesh.

Some sellers reportedly told customers that it was the famous Padma hilsa from Bangladesh.

Buyers said the Gujarat fish was often bigger and cheaper, but did not taste the same.

Some people also said it broke apart when they fried it.

Bangladesh stopped official hilsa imports from India on 23 September.

A fish association said some Gujarat fish may still have entered through illegal routes.

Many shoppers and traders preferred the taste of Bangladesh’s own hilsa.
