Maharashtra Proposes Replacing Dharavi Homes’ Ten-Year Transfer Bar

Maharashtra Proposes Replacing Dharavi Homes’ Ten-Year Transfer Bar

The Maharashtra government wants to change a rule for homes provided through the Dharavi redevelopment scheme.

Right now, people who receive these homes generally cannot sell, rent out or transfer them for 10 years.

They may transfer a home to a legal heir during that period.

The proposed change would remove this specific 10-year rule.

Instead, another housing law would apply until residents form a cooperative housing society.

After that, cooperative society law would set the transfer rules.

Breaking the current rule can lead to the home being taken back.

The proposal is part of four planned changes to Dharavi redevelopment regulations.
