White House Says US Controls Strait of Hormuz

The White House says the United States controls the Strait of Hormuz.

This is an important sea route used by ships carrying oil and gas.

US officials say American forces cleared mines and protected almost 1,500 commercial ships.

They say those ships carried 750 million barrels of crude oil to world markets.

The administration also says Iran has not exported oil since a US blockade restarted in July.

It says American forces turned away 75 ships that tried to break the blockade.

Iranian claims that it closed the waterway are rejected by US officials cited in the report.

The White House says the blockade is intended to reduce Iran’s money and ability to threaten international commerce.
